Metal Seated Ball Valve — Intro + Main Features
What is a Metal Seated Ball Valve?

Ball valves are among the most widely used valves in industry, valued for low flow resistance, a smooth bore, fast opening and closing, and easy automation. Conventional ball valves use PTFE or other non-metal seats, which limits them in high-temperature or abrasive service.

The NORTECH Metal Seated Ball Valve solves this with a metal-to-metal seat. It keeps all the advantages of a standard ball valve while adding outstanding heat durability and wear resistance — making it the right choice where soft seats cannot survive, such as pipelines carrying high-friction dust, slurry or solids. It is widely used across petroleum, chemical, power, metallurgy and other heavy industries.

Metal-to-Metal Seat — the hard-faced, precision-ground ball and seat deliver bubble-tight shut-off and long service life in high-temperature, abrasive and severe-service conditions where soft-seated valves fail.

1Advanced Hard Facing & Wear Resistance

Sealing is metal-to-metal between the ball and seat. The ball and seat surfaces are precision-ground and coated with advanced hard-facing materials — chromium carbide, tungsten carbide or Stellite — applied by HVOF, nickel-base or cobalt-base alloy spray welding. Surface hardness typically reaches HRC 55–60 (up to HRC 70), giving exceptional scratch and wear resistance and bubble-tight shut-off even with abrasive slurries, catalysts and solid particles. The sealing face withstands service temperatures up to 540°C, and as high as 980°C.

2Extreme Temperature & Severe Service Reliability

Unlike soft-seated valves that fail under high thermal stress, the metal-to-metal seat withstands extreme temperatures and sudden thermal shock without binding or losing sealing integrity. A disc-spring (spring-loaded) seat structure absorbs the thermal expansion of internal parts at high temperature, so the valve continues to open and close smoothly without seizing.

3Engineered Dual Configurations — Floating & Trunnion

The valve is offered in two engineered configurations to suit size and pressure. The floating type (smaller sizes and lower pressures) uses line pressure to push the ball against the downstream seat. The trunnion type (larger sizes up to 36″) transfers high-pressure loads directly to heavy-duty bearings, keeping operating torque low.

4Flexible Sealing Configurations — Uni / Bi-directional

Available with uni-directional sealing — preferred for high differential pressure, where line pressure energises the seat for tighter sealing — or bi-directional sealing, selected to suit the system layout and safety requirements. For floating valves the flow direction is marked on the body; bi-directional sealing is supplied on request.

5Comprehensive Double Block & Bleed (DBB)

For trunnion-mounted designs, spring-loaded metal seats exert constant pressure against the ball, providing reliable double block and bleed. With the valve closed and the central cavity drained through the bleed valve, the upstream and downstream seats block independently, letting operators safely isolate and vent the valve cavity under full pipeline pressure.

6Reliable Sealing Performance

A unique ball-grinding process rotates the ball against the grinder at varying positions to achieve high roundness and surface finish. Low-pressure sealing is provided by spring pre-tension, while a carefully designed seat piston effect achieves high-pressure sealing using the medium pressure itself. Tightness meets ANSI B16.104 Class IV.

7Fireproof Structure Design

In the metal-to-metal structure the gasket is stainless steel + flexible graphite and the packing is flexible graphite, ensuring reliable sealing even in the event of fire.
